Ceylon Cinnamon vs. Cassia Cinnamon: What’s Best for Your Pup?

Ceylon Cinnamon vs. Cassia Cinnamon: What’s Best for Your Pup?

Cinnamon for Dogs: Why We Choose Ceylon Over Cassia at Barkday Treats

Cinnamon is a beloved spice, celebrated for its warm, comforting aroma and surprising health benefits. But did you know that not all cinnamon is created equal? When it comes to choosing ingredients for Barkday Treats, we always prioritize safety, quality, and nutrition, and that’s especially true with cinnamon.

Let’s break down the two main types of cinnamon and why one is a much better choice for your pup.

The Two Main Types of Cinnamon

There are two primary types of cinnamon used in baking and cooking:

  1. Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum)
  2. Cassia Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia)

While both add a rich, cozy flavour to treats, they differ in safety and nutritional value, especially for dogs.

Ceylon Cinnamon (a.k.a. "True" Cinnamon)

Ceylon cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka and is often referred to as “true” cinnamon. It has a lighter colour, a more delicate, naturally sweet flavour, and a softer texture.

But what really sets Ceylon apart is its low coumarin content, a naturally occurring compound that, in high doses, can be toxic to the liver and kidneys. This makes Ceylon a much safer choice for both dogs and humans when consumed regularly.

At Barkday Treats, we exclusively use organic Ceylon cinnamon in our recipes. It’s a little more expensive, but worth every penny for your pup’s health.

Cassia Cinnamon (The Common Grocery Store Kind)

Cassia cinnamon is the variety most people recognize. It’s darker, tougher, and has a much stronger, spicier flavour. While it’s perfectly fine in small amounts for most adult humans, Cassia contains significantly higher levels of coumarin, which can pose health risks, especially for small dogs or those with liver sensitivities.

That’s why we steer clear of Cassia in all of our treats.

Why the Right Cinnamon Matters

Your pup’s safety is at the heart of every ingredient we use. Ceylon cinnamon not only adds a subtle sweetness to our treats, but it also brings peace of mind knowing we’re giving your dog the best possible option.

Whether it’s our Pumpkin Spice Cookies or other seasonal specials, you can rest assured that every Barkday Treat is thoughtfully crafted with dog-safe, premium ingredients.
